When it comes down to it, you should only be able to get into college based on your own merit in the academic field, and not because you are good at athletics. A person shouldn't be playing college sports if they can't keep up with the academic performance. I believe it should be a gradual movement and both academics and athletics should maintain a high performance in order to do athletics. A person should not be paid to be a college athlete, and a college team should only be made up of people who are actually going to that college. Isn't that what 'college' sports is for? To encourage students to join and give them a place where they can enjoy themselves after they've worked for it? You shouldn't be able to move outside of those guidelines because then it wouldn't actually be college sports. An athlete should not be able to bypass grades and just become an athlete, you have to earn it to make it fair for all the other students. There should not be a person on a college team who does not understand simple mathematics because he sacrificed his study time for sports. Do you really want to worsen the stereotype that athletes have problems with academics? It should be mandatory that athletes keep up with their studies and maintain a certain grade average to continue playing. You can't just give them a 'pass' on that. By ignoring college academics in favor of sports, you're ruining their education, and that's why people GO to college. If a student can't keep their grades up, they shouldn't be in a sport and teachers should not exempt them so they can have a good season. When it comes down to it, if they really want to be in a sport, they can just raise their grades or they don't deserve it. If this is gone through with and athletes don't have to study because they will be automatically given a spot on the team anyway, the integrity of college education will be at risk.
You make a great arguement here. I completely agree that college sports should only be played by those who deserve to play it through BOTH their academic and athletic skills. If you can't keep up with the academics then you don't belong in college sports. If you really want to not have to do any kind of educational work in your life besides throwing a football then don't go to college and wait with your fingers crossed for the NFL to draft you. Don't waste your time and ours by going to college and pretending you know what you're talking about by cheating your way through it. You're right though, athletes should definately have to always keep up their grades to be able to play sports. We don't want legions of idiot athletes in the world. If their sports career doesn't follow through then at least they will then have an educational background to fall back on. Besides, the chances of being drafted into the NFL (or any other sports organization) and making a career out of sports is quite slim. The athletes of the world would be much better off simply having a proper education along with their athletic skills.

Talking about athletics makes me remember about college years when i loved to play volleyball but was too shy to play during school's sportsfest, I was just too shy.
